Over 100 people were in attendance for Saskatchewan's first gay-straight alliance summit Saturday afternoon in Saskatoon.

OUT Saskatoon teamed up with Camp Fyrefly to bring the two-day conference to teachers and students from around the province.

"People aren't exactly sure what it means to start a [gay-straight alliance]," explained Suzy Yim, co-organizer of the event. "They have good intentions but they don't necessarily know how to do it; they don't necessarily know how to get students involved. And it's, for some people, very new, so we want to bring people together in a space from across the province."

From there, Yim said participants of the summit could easily share their experiences and talk about their goals to get a better understanding of what a GSA is.

This is a time where we're growing together and it's very exciting for myself to be doing this work because people are interested in it.- Suzy Yim

"The reason this came about was because there was a need for it. It's the perfect time and it's an amazing opportunity for us to learn together," she said.

The conference featured two keynote speakers and over 12 workshops and 20 presenters for participants.

"This is a time where we're growing together and it's very exciting for myself to be doing this work because people are interested in it," said Yim.

She said the two coordinating groups intend to bring the event back annually until it's no longer necessary.

The summit wraps up Saturday night with a Queer Prom.
