Saskatoon's Midtown Plaza had to be evacuated Saturday afternoon after a car caught fire in the mall's parkade.

The Saskatoon Fire Department said it received a call at 5:10 p.m. CST from a man saying his car was on fire in the underground parking lot.

Crews arrived to find flames coming from the car's engine.

The fire department said the mall's fire suppression system prevented the fire from spreading, and firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within 20 minutes.

However, by that time, smoke from the fire had filled the area and begun to drift into the mall.

The mall's ventilation system was used to clear the smoke from both the shopping area and the parkade.

A member of the security staff at the mall had to be assessed for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries.
