Police were combing a sizeable swath of busy Eighth Street E. Sunday morning after an early-morning shooting left a man in the hospital with unknown injuries — one of three violent incidents on the street in the last 10 days.

According to a Saskatoon Police Service release, Sunday's shooting happened on the 900 block of Eighth Street E. at around 4:15 in the morning. That's just west of the intersection of Eighth and Clarence Avenue.

By 8 a.m., police were walking back and forth on a half-block-long, cordoned-off section of Eighth Street that encompassed a small two-story bungalow, a commercial building that appeared available for lease, and the Scotiabank branch across the street.

Police went in and out of the bank several times.

Motorists were asked to avoid that area of Eighth Street, which is one of Saskatoon's busiest shopping stretches. Those restrictions were lifted by mid-afternoon.

No other details about the shooting were released by police.

"More information on this incident will be released at a later time," the police said in an afternoon update.

3 violent incidents in 10 days

Early Saturday morning, four blocks away from the scene of Sunday's shooting, police thwarted the robbery of a 39-year-old woman. Police said they arrived and soon found the two alleged female perpetrators, aged 20 and 31.

"Upon seeing police, they attempted to get into a waiting vehicle but their efforts were unsuccessful. Officers located the purse, an imitation handgun and a small amount of methamphetamine," according to a police release.

A 50-year-old male driver was also arrested in connection with the incident as he was breaching conditions of his court order.

The female suspects were charged with weapons charges, drug possession and robbery with a firearm.

The victim was unharmed physically.

Several days before, on the evening of Feb. 28, on the 3300 block of Eighth Street E., a 25-year-old woman stabbed a 44-year-old man, according to police.

"Upon arrival, officers located the man who reported being on the sidewalk and having a verbal exchange with two unknown men before one of the men stabbed him with a knife," according to the release.

"A canine officer arriving in the area spotted a suspicious male on foot on Oliver Crescent and took him into custody. He was found to be in possession of a knife."

The victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
