A Saskatchewan man died Saturday when the small plane he was piloting crashed in a rural area near Red Deer, Alta.

RCMP and transportation officials are investigating a fatal plane crash near Red Deer, Alta. A 70-year-old Saskatchewan man died in the crash of a small plane. He was the only person on board. (CBC)

A Saskatchewan man died Saturday when the small plane he was piloting crashed in a rural area near Red Deer, Alta.

According to RCMP, the single-engine plane crashed into a farm field about 13 kilometres west of Sylvan Lake, a resort community west of Red Deer, around 1:30 p.m. MT.

They said only one person was in the plane and he was dead at the scene. He was identified as Mike Paul Chysyk, 70, from Saskatoon.

RCMP said investigators with the Transportation Safety Board are helping with the investigation. They said the cause of the crash was currently not known.

The plane was registered out of Saskatoon.
