A baseball club in Swift Current, Sask., is changing its name.

The team announced Friday that the nickname Indians will no longer be used.

"The organization has put considerable thought into the decision and we believe it's the right thing to do at this time," Harv Martinez, a long time member of the club, said in a statement posted on the club's homepage. "We are excited for the possibilities which lie ahead."

According to the team, the club's board of directors had been considering a name change for over a year.

A new name for the club is expected to be determined prior to their next annual general meeting set for early November.

"The tradition and passion for baseball in this region will still be strong and vibrant," Martinez said. "The new direction in creating a new nickname allows for us to re-brand our product and promote the team in a more current and sensitive manner."

Martinez, who has sat on the board of the club since retiring as head coach, added that they are looking forward to having a new name.
