Saskatoon outdoor pools closed as planned
Saskatoon officials say they are sticking with their planned end-of-summer shut-down of most outdoor pools, despite the hot weather.
Only the Mayfair pool will remain open through the next few days.
Randy Grauer, a spokesman for the city, said it would cost too much to re-open other outdoor pools.
"Outdoor pools aren't a switch on-switch off sort of thing," Grauer said. "There's a lot ... we have to arrange well in advance for the decommissioning of them. There's also budgetary considerations."
According to Grauer, people in the community are more concerned about preparing for the return to school than they are about a swim on a hot day.
"We'll think more closely about it in the future," Grauer said Wednesday. "But I know for this year we've just chosen to keep Mayfair open. And I'm very confident that Mayfair Pool will meet the outdoor swimming needs of our public."
Regina, by contrast, said Tuesday that it was extending the operation of many of its outdoor pools through to the end of the long weekend.
