City officials in Regina are looking into how the downtown plaza square was damaged on Sunday.

Several short pillars near the permanent stage area at City Square Plaza have somehow been ripped from the street at some point early in the day.

The heavy structures were seen on their sides, with rebar protruding from them.

As well, the brickwork road was damaged when the rebar was ripped loose.

The City of Regina is looking into what could have caused the damage, a spokesman told CBC News on Sunday.

Staff will report the matter to police on Monday and clean things up after investigators have looked at the damage, the spokesman added.

In the meantime, city crews are closing off the area for safety reasons.
