Regina homes evacuated after gas leak

Homes were evacuated in north Regina following a natural gas leak Thursday morning.

Homes were evacuated in north Regina following a natural gas leak Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called after a gas line was punctured just after 9 a.m. CST on the 4500 block of Ellard Way in the Lakewood area, Regina police said.

It's a residential neighbourhood, but there is also a day care operating on the same block. At least four houses east and west of the gas line break were evacuated.

CBC reporter Dean Gutheil said about 40 people were left milling around on sidewalks in the area while SaskEnergy workers closed off the leak.

The problem happened when someone who was drilling holes for fence posts punctured the line, officials said.

Police confirmed around 9:35 a.m. that the leak had been capped and people were being permitted to go back to their homes.
