Forestry firm cuts too close to lakes, gets fined $18K
Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp pleads guilty
A forest products company must pay $18,000 in fines and surcharges for tree-harvesting infractions at two lakes in Saskatchewan.
Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp pleaded guilty recently in a Prince Albert courtroom to charges under the Forest Resources Management Act.
Court heard the company breached an approved operating plan when it failed to visually screen tree-cutting at Cowan Lake and damaged wildlife habitat by harvesting to the edge of Pankoski Lake during the 2011-2012 operating season.
The province says a tip from the public alerted the Ministry of Environment to the Cowan Lake infraction.
