A section of Regina's landfill caught fire Wednesday afternoon, sending large plumes of smoke into the sky.

The fire was reported around 3 p.m. CST in an area of the landfill used for commercial garbage and was still burning some two hours later.

"There's thick black smoke," CBC News reporter Kent Morrison said from the scene.

Morrison noted that particular section of the landfill would contain plastic products, and a slight breeze was moving the smoke east, away from the city.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.

By Wednesday evening, fire crews were reporting they had the fire under control and expected it would be completely out by morning.

Heavy equipment was used to move dirt around the landfill to smother the flames and ensure the fire did not spread.

While environment officials were on the scene, there were no concerns about smoke coming from the fire.
