Quebec singer found dead beside knife

Popular Quebec singer Dédé Fortin has been found dead in his apartment with a knife lying next to his body.

Montreal police are investigating the death of Fortin, 38, who sang with the group Les Colocs. He was enormously popular in Quebec, winning the Felix award for rock album of the year in 1998.

The singer-songwriter was born in St-Thomas Didyme, Que. He grew up in a family of 11 children. There will be an autopsy on the body Thursday. Police are treating the death as suspicious.

Late Wednesday, the official Internet site of Les Colocs carried a black page with a picture of Fortin and the message: "Dede has decided to leave, May 10, 2000."
