Protesters slam circus bear act

Protesters in Edmonton demonstrated outside the Moscow Circus on Ice on Thursday night.

The activists are upset about a performance by skating bears.

The performance features a group of trained bears with hockey helmets, skates and oversized hockey sticks batting a puck around an ice rink. Trainers accompanied the bears on the ice.

"It was painful to watch," said one member of the audience. "It looks like they're in pain. I didn't like that part at all."

The Edmonton SPCA has monitored the circus and says no laws have been broken.

The Moscow Circus on Ice is also scheduled to appear in Saskatoon, Regina and several cities in Ontario during its current tour.

It will not perform in Vancouver, where animal acts are against the law.
