Woman seeks her P.E.I. family's medical details
A Halifax woman whose birth parents were from P.E.I. is desperately searching for family medical information from Island relatives.
Mary MacDonald has muscular dystrophy. She said the genetic disease has progressed rapidly and she is in need of clinical trials.
But in order to be considered for the trials, doctors have to know what type of the disease runs in her family, she said.
MacDonald is in contact with relatives on her mother's side. They don't recall anyone in the family with muscular dystrophy.
She said efforts through the years to make contact with her father's family have been rejected.
MacDonald is hoping they will now hear her plea and help her with the information she needs.
"The disease has become very severe," said MacDonald. "You know, we were optimistic over the years that it would not reach this point, but it is quite catastrophic now. And also I have a son who is in his mid-twenties and is very concerned — and understandably so — as to whether there is a possibility that he is going to inherit this."
MacDonald said it's become a life-or-death situation. She said her goal isn't to establish a relationship, but to just get the information.
