UPEI, Holland College funding cut by province

Funding to the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College is being cut three per cent by the P.E.I. government.

Funding to the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College is being cut three per cent by the P.E.I. government.

Both institutions were notified of the change well in advance of the upcoming provincial budget.

"Both post-secondary institutions have already been advised that there are going to be cuts, said Allen Roach, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning.

"You know, definitely we are looking at our deficit … And I think that, for the better part, we're looking across all departments to realize cuts to reduce the deficit. So, you know, I guess we're all taking a bit of a bite on that one."

Officials with UPEI and Holland College said they are working on their budgets now, incorporating the cut.

There's no word yet on whether the reduced government funding will impact programs, services or tuition.
