Police believe exotic bird didn't fly away

Charlottetown police are investigating what they believe is the theft of an exotic bird.

Charlottetown police are investigating what they believe is the theft of an exotic bird.

Staff at Pets Unlimited on Buchanan Street reported the missing yellow-sided conure Tuesday. They say it was taken from the store sometime between 6 and 9 p.m. Monday.

"If there are there are people ... out there that have the bird, we would ask them to return the bird rather than turn it loose because likely it wouldn't survive in our harsh winter weather conditions," said Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan.

The birds on average grow to be 20 to 25 centimetres high and weigh about 60 to 90 grams.

The bird is valued at about $450. The yellow-sided conure is native to parts of Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Charlottetown police.
