Five people were taken to hospital following a head-on crash Friday morning in the Tryon area, say RCMP.

Sgt. Darrell Gill of the Prince District RCMP said two pickup trucks collided shortly after 7 a.m. on the Trans-Canada Highway.

"It was a head-on collision and both vehicles ended up off the road in the ditch on the side of the road," said Gill.

"A male in the smaller pick-up was taken to Charlottetown. He seemed to have the most serious injuries. The male who was driving the larger pickup, in that vehicle, seemed to have the worst injuries. The three females were taken to Prince County."

The extent of the injuries are not known at this time.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues.

A portion of the highway was closed for about two hours.
