Police say the family wasn't home when the fire broke out at around 11 o'clock, but two pets died.

Someone driving by saw the flames and called for help.

The Tyne Valley Fire Department was the main responder, with backup from neighbouring fire departments.

A portion of Route 11, from Stewart Lane to the Portage Shore Road was closed to traffic.

The provincial fire marshal's office is investigating the cause.
