Drop tax on golf, P.E.I. asked
P.E.I.'s golf industry wants the government to scrap the provincial sales tax on memberships and green fees.
The industry says the tax is keeping golfers away from the courses. There's been a 27 per cent drop in rounds played by non-membership golfers since the PST was implemented in 2004.
"The whole key to this is trying to maintain a healthy industry instead of, you know, continuing the downward trend," said Dallas Desjardins, manager of the Summerside Golf and Country Club.
"We're just hoping to increase the participation in golf by making sure it's affordable."
There are about 28,000 golfers on P.E.I., about 20 per cent of Islanders.
Representatives of the golf industry will meet with ministers and MLAs Tuesday to discuss the downturn of the sport.
