A first edition of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables sold at auction Thursday for well above the expected value.

The book was part of a large lot of first editions sold by PBA Galleries Auctioneers and Appraisers of San Francisco.

PBA Galleries described the book as a rare first edition printing of the classic children's tale with the words "First Impression, April, 1908" on the copyright page. It noted the book was in the rarer brown cloth cover, rather than the more common green.

It had estimated the value between $8,000 and $12,000. It sold for $14,400.
