200 tires burn in suspicious O’Leary fire
The RCMP believe someone deliberately set a pile of about 200 tires on fire in O’Leary Wednesday morning.
The tires were leaning against a large building.
Firefighters arrived on the scene around 12:30 a.m. to find the flames spreading quickly.
"Tires don’t ignite on their own as a rule," said Ron Phillips, O’Leary’s fire chief. "The fire spread into the structure itself."
Phillips said the building is a former grocery store that is now being used for storage.
"Basically the building was in two sections. There was the northeast section that was burning. We put the fire out in that section and prevented it from spreading to the other section."
Phillips said they had to demolish about a quarter of the building because it was no longer safe.
He said the tires were in the process of being sold.
The investigation has now been handed over to the RCMP.
