Yellow friendship bench installed at Carleton University to fight depression
Bench created in memory of 19-year-old student who struggled with mental illness
A bright yellow bench installed at Carleton University on Wednesday is a reminder to students that one of the ways to overcome depression is to sit down and talk about it.
The "friendship bench" is a mental health initiative created in memory of Lucas Fiorella, a 19-year-old who took his own life last year.
His father, Sam Fiorella, says the stresses of university can be hard to handle, especially for young people away from home for the first time, and that he doesn't want other young people to suffer depression in silence or isolation.
