Vancouver mining tycoon gives $25M to U of Ottawa

Telfer's gift to the University of Ottawa's School of Management, announced by the university Tuesday, is the largest single gift ever received by the university and is believed to be the largest single gift ever given to a Canadian business school.

Telfer graduated from the school 31 years ago.

"I attended here at a very pivotal point in my life and so I attribute a lot of the success I've had to going to school here," Telfer said.

"And the opportunity was presented to make a donation and name the school, so it was too good to turn down."

The school will be renamed the Telfer School of Management.

Telfer, 61,worked in the precious metals business after graduating.

He served as president and CEO of Vancouver-based gold producer Goldcorp Inc. from March 2005 until November 2006, and is now the chair of the company's board of directors.
