An Ottawa worker cutting trees is in critical condition in hospital after a chainsaw he was using kicked back and cut his arm in what paramedics called "a life-threatening laceration."

Paramedics were called Thursday at 10:31 a.m. when the incident happened on Sharkey Cres. in Ottawa's Cumberland neighbourhood.

The tree service worker, a 26-year-old Ottawa man, was several metres up in a bucket lift when the chain saw kicked back.

His co-workers lowered him to the ground and applied pressure to the wound with a tourniquet made from another worker's T-shirt, paramedics said.

The worker was airlifted from the scene by an ORNGE helicopter. He is in critical condition in hospital.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour has been notified of the incident.
