A major section of the Transitway some University of Ottawa students rely on will close April 24, even though exams at the school run until April 27.

During a technical briefing Wednesday, city officials said the closure will affect buses operating between Laurier and Lees stations and force the temporary closure of the Campus Transitway station.

The shut-down is part of a series of closures to allow crews to convert the bus-only road to light rail, which is set begin operating in 2018.

Most buses will be detoured onto Nicholas Street, where on some stretches they'll be competing for space with cars and trucks, as Nicholas will have sections of bus-only lanes.

A smaller number of buses, including routes 95, 85 and 98, will be detoured along King Edward Avenue.

The final closure on June 19 will see buses diverted off the Transitway onto Scott between Tunney's Pasture and Merton Street.

OC Transpo general manager John Manconi tried to reassure students the transit agency would be there to ease the transition.

"We're out there to take care of our customers. You'll see a lot of OC Transpo staff, with special attention to University of Ottawa students," he said.

Manconi also said the city's recent experiences closing other sections of the Transitway has led to smoother transitions in recent months.

"Look at our track record. There were a lot concerns about Scott Street, I think we did a really good job there. We had a glitch on Hurdman, we fixed it within hours," he said.
