An 18-year-old man has been charged with arson after a barn fire near Gananoque, Ont., on Sunday night that killed 30 cattle and destroyed the barn.

The fire happened at about 8 p.m. Sunday on Maple Grove Road, just northwest of Gananoque, Ontario Provincial Police said in a media release.

Firefighters from three departments responded to fire, which had fully engulfed the barn.

Thirty cattle inside the barn died in the fire, OPP said. Total damage, including the loss of the cattle, is estimated at about $1 million.

An 18-year-old man from Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township has been charged with arson.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday in Brockville, Ont.

The OPP investigation continues, with help from the Office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario.
