Tania Pontbriand, ex-Quebec teacher, gets 20 months in jail for sex assault
Former gym teacher convicted of having relationship with student, 15, while teaching gym

A former Quebec gym teacher has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old boy.
Tania Pontbriand was found guilty in January 2014 of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor while teaching in Rosemère, Que., a town near Laval.
She was accused of having a relationship with a 15-year-old student who told police he and Pontbriand had more than 200 sexual encounters between 2002 and 2004.
Her sentence was handed down on Friday in a Gatineau, Que., courtroom. She also received two years probation.
Pontbriand, who was originally charged in 2008, was 32 years old when the encounters began.
During the trial, her lawyer called the former student a liar and a manipulator, saying he withheld details from police and at the preliminary hearing about his sexual relationship with Pontbriand.
In his decision, which was more than 150 pages long, the judge said there was a profound inequality between Pontbriand and the victim.
