A man was seriously injured in a stabbing early Sunday at a nightclub in the Hull sector of Gatineau, police say.

According to Gatineau police, the man was stabbed at 1:10 a.m., in front of Mardi Gras, a night club at 117 Portage Promenade.

The man's injuries are considered serious, but police say his life is not in danger.

Ronald Mefleh, who has lived in the area for three years, isn't surprised an attack like this happened. He said the street is rowdy at night, with people drinking having little regard for those sleeping nearby.

Mefleh said it's not uncommon for fights to break out and for police to have to break them up.

"It was only a matter of time until something like this happened," he said.

An investigation is underway and investigators hope to question witnesses. A security perimeter has been set up around the club.

Portage Promenade is closed to traffic until further notice.
