Police investigate fatal stabbing

Ottawa police say the fatal stabbing of a Cornwall, Ont., man outside a drug store on Rideau Street on Saturday was the city's sixth homicide of the year.

Henry Belmore, 27, was found bleeding on the sidewalk at Rideau and Nelson Street just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said on the night Belmore was stabbed, he had been in at least two altercations beforehand.

Belmore, also known as Hugo, had been staying at the Ottawa Mission.

Earl — a lodger at the mission who did not want to give his last name — said Belmore became angry Saturday after he was denied entry.

"He was looking for a fight with anybody," he said. "He wanted to fight me ... and I said just leave us alone. And he shuffled off a bit and he tried to confront a few other people and they wanted nothing to do with it."

Police said they believe Belmore was involved in a dispute outside the Shopper's Drug Mart on Rideau when the stabbing occurred.

They said they are looking for a woman who called 911 to report the incident, as well as a male who is believed to have been walking by at the time and may have witnessed the incident.
