Man taken to hospital after chilly night in pine tree

Western Quebec regional police arrested a man who spent the night in a pine tree to protest the expansion of Highway 5 through a part of Gatineau Park.

The man was one of four people who had scaled the 125-foot tree Wednesday in defiance of an injunction ordering protesters to not obstruct work near Wakefield, Que.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for possible hypothermia. Three others were arrested Wednesday and also taken to hospital. All four are expected to be charged.

Four other protesters were on the scene Thursday morning but had not crossed the barricade as set out by the injunction.

Highway 5 currently hugs Gatineau Park's eastern edge before turning into Highway 105. The proposed expansion would extend the highway to Valley Drive in Wakefield, Que.

Protesters want an updated review of the environmental impact of the highway before work proceeds.
