An 84-year-old Ottawa woman is among 10 suspected in a drug trafficking operation that used Canada Post to mail marijuana to northern communities.

Police executed search warrants at several homes in south Ottawa on Wednesday, seizing large quantities of cocaine, hash, marijuana and cash. Raids conducted at homes on the 400 block of Leitrim Road, the 1100 block of Meadowlands Drive, Castlegreen Private and Haxby Private yielded:

  • More than 13,750 grams of marijuana (street value of about $140,000).
  • Nearly 8,500 grams of hash (street value of about $170,000).
  • Nearly 1,000 grams of cocaine (street value of about $100,000).
  • More than 1,100 grams of an unknown powder sent for analysis.
  • Nearly $3,500 Canadian.

The investigation began in mid-November. With the help of Canada Post, investigators seized nearly 670 grams of marijuana that had been hidden in 12 coffee cans destined for Nunavut, police said. The street value of the drugs is about $6,700 in Ottawa but the value "increases exponentially" in northern communities, police said.

Ten men and women from Ottawa, as young as 19 and as old as 84, face a long list of charges, including trafficking controlled substances, possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime. Four of the suspects are immediate family members that were living in the same home.

Two of the suspects, an 84-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, remain at large.

Five of the suspects, men aged 60 and 22, and women aged 19, 26 and 37, have been released on a promise to appear in court on January 14.

A 24-year-old man was refused bail. His next court appearance is December 19.

A 55-year-old man and a 46-year-old man were also refused bail. Both are next scheduled to appear in court on December 23.

  • An earlier version of this story identified the 84-year-old facing charges as a man. However, the 84-year-old is a woman.
