A 22-year-old man is fighting to stay alive after a motorcycle collision in Lowertown early Saturday morning, say Ottawa paramedics.

Emergency crews were called to St. Patrick Street and Beausoleil Drive around 6:42 a.m. for a single-vehicle crash.

Ottawa police said two men were riding on the same motorcycle.

The 22-year-old man has severe, life-threatening injuries, according to paramedics. They said the man was unconscious and they had to insert an airway to help him breathe.

He was sent to the trauma centre at the Ottawa Hospital Civic campus where he remains in critical condition.

The other man, 26, was conscious and speaking to first responders when they arrived. Paramedics said he has a serious upper leg injury and severe road rash, but is in stable condition.

Ottawa police are investigating what caused the crash.

St. Patrick Street was closed westbound between Cobourg Street and King Edward Avenue, but has since reopened.
