Mother in custody after son abducted from elementary school
Child safe after mother took son from Fellows Road elementary school just after 8 a.m., police say
The mother of an Ottawa boy is in police custody after her son was taken from an elementary school on Fellows Road early Wednesday morning.
Police were called to a French Catholic elementary school in the 1300-block of Fellows Road, near Baseline Road and Woodroffe Avenue, at about 8:10 a.m.
"A parent dropped their child off to school in the west end, the father of the child, who has full custody from what we understand," said Ottawa police Insp. John Maxwell.
"The mother of the child attended and took the child away in a vehicle driven by another person. The school reported this to us and we immediately set up our partner assault unit team to start investigating."
Police arrived at the school, gathered descriptions of the suspects and the vehicle, then used a special phone system to alert other law enforcement agencies in the area.
Later Wednesday morning, Ontario Provincial Police in the Cornwall area spotted the suspect vehicle and pulled it over. The boy's mother and a man who was driving the vehicle were being transferred into Ottawa police custody Wednesday morning.
The boy is safe and will be reunited with his father, Maxwell said.
