A man in his 50s who was critically injured in a fire on Albert Street near Preston Street on Sunday morning has died.

Ottawa paramedics said Sunday the victim suffered smoke inhalation and second and third-degree burns to most of his body after the fire broke out in the 800 block of Albert Street around 10 a.m.

He needed CPR and "aggressive advanced life support treatments" en route to hospital.

On Tuesday, Ottawa police confirmed the victim is Robert Lawson, who was born in 1958.

Sgt. David Christie with the arson unit said police and the fire marshal have ruled its cause to be accidental so the criminal investigation into the fire is closed.

The fire marshal's office will continue its investigation to see if it can determine a cause for its final report, Christie said.
