Ottawa firefighters are recommending opening a new station in Kanata North and consolidating two stations into a new one along the Cyrville corridor.

The station location recommendations, presented by fire chief Gerry Pingitore at a technical briefing Thursday, say growth in Kanata North is spurring the need for the new station there. If approved, it would open in 2020.

The study also found one station could serve all of the Cyrville corridor, and that two stations — Station 36 at 900 Industrial Ave. and Station 55 at 1700 Blair Rd. — would be consolidated into the new Cyrville fire station, which would open in 2018.

The study also reaffirmed the need for a new station in Orleans South, which was already approved in an earlier council decision.
