Several families were forced from their homes early this morning after a raging fire in Gatineau spread from one house to three neighbouring residences.

Firefighters say they received a call at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday to a fire at 21 Morin St., near the intersection of Gagnon Street.

Police had already helped eight to ten residents leave the homes when firefighters arrived to find "a big ball of fire" according to Gatineau fire chief Luc Meilleur.

The fire spread to a multi-unit home at 23, 25 and 27 Morin Street before firefighters could contain and put out the blaze. Damages are estimated at $300,000.

The Red Cross is helping those who lost their homes in the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
