Firefighters were called at 5:08 p.m. to 275 Meadowlilly Rd., near the intersection of Bank Street and White Alder Avenue, where thick black smoke and flames were visible from a distance.

It took more than three hours to bring the flames under control. Several units were destroyed, while the others suffered major smoke and water damage.

The initial damage estimate for the 12-unit apartment complex is $4.2 million.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called to the fire scene to investigate.

One firefighter was taken to hospital for chest pain and breathing problems and stayed overnight. Another two were treated at the scene — one for cuts to the face and another for high blood pressure.
