Designer Dinesh K. Ramsay on 2019 trends and the Great India Festival
The Great India Festival takes place from Aug. 9 to 11
Dinesh K. Ramsay was raised in the spotlight.
Learning from his mother, Ramsay decided to pursue a career in fashion with a focus on Bollywood and bridal attire. The now Mississauga-based designer has created looks for the Oscars red carpet and Bollywood celebrities, and this weekend he is headed to Ottawa for a special fashion show as part of the Great India Festival.
From Aug. 9 to 11, the Great India Festival will bring a celebration of Indian culture to City Hall with musical performances, free workshops and a unique fashion show featuring Ramsay's designs.
CBC Ottawa is a proud sponsor of the festival and asked Ramsay a few questions by email about his inspiration and 2019 trends in Indian fashion.
His answers have been edited for length and clarity.
Q: Where do you seek inspiration for your designs?
I've had the opportunity to design for many films and I still get inspired by Bollywood. I always try to ask myself, 'If I was to design for that particular scene or movie, what would I have made instead?'
Q: What designs will you be showing at the Great India Festival's fashion show in Ottawa?
For the first time ever, we are doing a fashion show in Canada in the form of a musical play. We will be showcasing an entire Indian wedding with all the ceremonies and how the bride and groom and their family dresses up at each event. The designs you will get to see are the latest, very trendy wedding outfits.
Q: What are some of the 2019 trends you're looking out for as a designer?
In 2019, we have some big detachable trains on the reception gown and lehengas (skirts).
Let's not forget the groom. They always feel left out wearing the classic sherwani (long suit). This year and going forward, I have created some very interesting cuts for the groom to wear at the sangeet (a celebration with music and dancing) and ceremony functions.
Q: It's wedding season! What advice do you have for people looking to find a fashion-forward outfit for an Indian wedding?
I have learned that brides and grooms like to get attire they can reuse for someone else's wedding. We do have some beautiful outfits with some layers in them that can be removed later on and reused.
The Great India Festival fashion show will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10. For more information about the festival, visit tgifottawa.ca.
