Park Wardens want the right to carry sidearms to bolster their enforcement power. But, Parks Canada says the job doesn't warrant it. Alan Latourelle speaks for Parks Canada. "Parks has an outstanding record in terms of employee safety. We are concerned about the safety of the Park wardens and we've taken the appropriate steps to make sure that they're safe in carrying out their law enforcement duties".

Last year, enforcement duties were turned over the the RCMP after a federal safety officer ruled that wardens should be better protected. Both the wardens and Parks Canada are appealing that decision.

Parks Canada employs about 425 wardens at 39 national parks across the country.
