Fire in vacant Mechanicsville house spreads next door, forcing family out

A family of five was temporarily homeless after a fire broke out in a vacant home next door to them early Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out at 59 Carruthers Ave., near Burnside Avenue in the Mechanicsville neighbourhood, at about 2:15 a.m.

The blaze damaged two neighbouring homes at 61 and 63 Carruthers Ave., the Ottawa fire department said.

A family of two adults and three children were temporarily displaced from one of the neighbouring homes, but were expected to be allowed back home on Wednesday.

No one was injured.

Damage is estimated at $335,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
