A six-year-old boy was rescued after the snowmobile he was on fell through the ice southeast of Ottawa Saturday.

Ottawa paramedics were called shortly after 10:30 a.m. to Bearbrook Creek, near Dunning Road.

Firefighters said the boy's grandfather was able to secure him to a tree in the middle of the creek before going to call for help.

The boy was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, where he is being treated for hypothermia.

He is in serious but stable condition.

Firefighters are warning people to stay off the ice because its thickness is unpredictable at this time of year.
