An excavator under tow struck the underside of a bridge in Sydney Wednesday morning, causing chunks of concrete to fall on several vehicles.

Traffic was still being re-routed to access ramps on either side of the overpass on Highway 125 near the Alexandra Street exit early Wednesday afternoon.

RCMP said no one was hurt in the accident.

A tractor-trailer was towing the excavator; the excavator's bucket struck the overpass. A piece of concrete smashed through the windshield of the truck travelling behind it.

"There was other vehicles involved. There was a large truck directly behind the excavator. It received considerable damage and in the opposite direction there was two passenger vehicles, a van and an SUV that received significant damage as well," said Const. Ron MacDonald.

"Thankfully, we're not dealing with any injuries here.  People were able to pull over to the side of the road and be safe."

Engineers are still trying to figure out if the overpass is safe to reopen.
