Two arrested following Lower Sackville standoff

A six-hour armed standoff in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia came to an end Saturday morning around 9 a.m.

Two men were taken to custody Saturday morning following a six-hour armed standoff in Lower Sackville.

RCMP were called to an apartment on Walker Avenue to answer a noise complaint at around 3 a.m.

Police said there was an altercation with several men as officers attempted to make arrests.

"They were met in the hall of the apartment by subjects brandishing weapons, golf clubs and stuff and another one that they believed was a firearm," said Cpl. Scott McCrae.

Police said one woman was arrested, while two men retreated into an apartment and refused to come out.

The three-level apartment building was evacuated.

The officers backed off and the emergency response team was brought in.

Negotiators spoke with the two men inside the apartment — who McCrae said are in their early twenties.

"An area around this apartment building was cordoned off for public safety," said McCrae. "So the members backed off and called in our emergency response team and a crisis negotiator."

The standoff ended at about 9 a.m. and two men were taken into custody. McCrae said charges were expected to be laid later Saturday.

Police obtained a search warrant and are still on the crime scene.
