Titanic anniversary brought spike in souvenirs

The 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic brought a spike in souvenirs, but not all are authentic.

Local historian says not all souvenirs are real

The hoopla surrounding the 100th anniversary of Titanic's sinking was big.

It got lots of people all over the world rummaging through drawers and cupboards looking for Titanic memorabilia.

"I have seen a marked increase with people bringing Titanic objects to us," said historian Dan Conlin.

Conlin said the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic now hears from five people a month who claim to have Titanic artifacts. They're all catalogued, some check out while others are fake and the museum has seen their share of frauds.

One of the most common are fake key tags.

Titanic is a big draw for the museum and new artifacts are being investigated all the time.
