Halifax Regional Police have concluded that a 15-year-old boy accidentally shot himself Sunday while walking on Lahey Road in Dartmouth's north end.

Police received the call just after 11 a.m. AT. The victim was taken to the IWK Health Sciences Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.

A handgun was removed from the scene.

In a news release Sunday evening, police said when the teenager is released from hospital, he will be facing weapons-related criminal charges.

The hospital was on lockdown for about four hours on Sunday, which is usually the hospital's standard procedure when someone is brought in with gunshot wounds.
