St. FX inks deal, ends strike

The union representing striking faculty members voted 96 per cent in favour of accepting their new four-year contract.

Strike began on Jan. 28

A faculty strike at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S., is officially over.

The union representing striking faculty members voted 96 per cent in favour of accepting their new four-year contract.

It includes an eight per cent raise over four years as well as health and dental benefits for all members and more job security for lab instructors.

Classes resume Monday.

Students will have one week of class before reading break begins.

The deal will also see an additional week of classes added to the St. FX school year to make up for time lost during the three-week strike.

The 400 members of the St. FX Association of University Teachers — which include faculty, librarians, lab instructors and extension staff — had been without a contract for eight months.
