SF Rendering plant building destroyed in overnight fire

An animal rendering factory in Canning, N.S. was destroyed in an overnight fire.

Building stored old cooking oil

A plant that makes feed for mink in Canard, N.S. lost one of its buildings in an overnight fire.

Jeff Skaling, a deputy fire chief with the local volunteer fire department, says a call came in from the SF Rendering plant, near Canning, around 11:30 p.m.

It took at least six different fire departments, including Kentville, Port Williams Greenwich and New Minas, to put out the flames.

Skaling says the plant turns animal products into "protein meal."

"Inside were 45 gallon drums of old cooking oil, so the fire burning in there generated a fair bit of heat," he said.

Four nearby buildings weren't damaged. Skaling says he thinks the plant can resume operations.

There are no reported injuries.

The cause is still under investigation.
