Sackville RCMP officer charged with assault

A 30-year-old RCMP officer from Lower Sackville, N.S. is facing three charges of assault, stemming from a Serious Incident Response Team investigation.

Cst. Zeran Hutson Simmonds is due in a Dartmouth court in February to face charges of assaulting his partner.

The province's special investigation response team said the allegations happened between Dec. 30, 2012 and Jan. 5.

Police said a woman called 911 just after midnight late last week.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.

It is required to file a public report within three months after concluding its investigation.
