Purolator lays off 23 in Nova Scotia

Purolator Inc. says the company is laying off 23 people in Nova Scotia as it "adapts to market conditions" and the arrival of United Parcel Service Inc.

Purolator Inc. says the company is laying off 23 people in Nova Scotia as it "adapts to market conditions" and the arrival of United Parcel Service Inc.

The layoff notices were issued last week.

"Purolator is a network business and as volumes change we adapt our structure and service to align with market demand," said Pascal Dessureault, a spokesman for Purolator.

United Parcel Service Inc. — better known as UPS — is an international courier company that began its expansion into the Maritimes this spring. UPS had previously been outsourcing deliveries to Purolator on routes where it did not have trucks.

Dessureault said Purolator remains committed to the region.

"As a long-time employer in Nova Scotia, we have been present for 40 years," he said, adding that Purolator remains "a reliable business partner and active community member in Atlantic Canada."
