Man barred from fishing in Canada for 5 years

Two fishermen have been fined thousands of dollars and one is temporarily barred from fishing in Canadian waters for illegally catching halibut aboard the Portuguese Lady off of Shelburne County, N.S.

Steven Edward Goreham and Corey Wade Barkhouse were convicted in Bridgewater court late last month. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans released details on Tuesday.

Goreham has been fined $10,000 and can't fish in Canada for five years. Barkhouse faces $37,000 in fines.

The Portuguese Lady has been under investigation since April of 2010.

"The Oct. 22 sentencing brings to a conclusion a series of convictions involving the same fishing vessel which together yielded fines totaling $101,000 and forfeitures of $12,308 in catch and gear," said the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in a release.

The investigation has already resulted in substantial fines and forfeitures for another two crewmembers from the same vessel and a member of the processing industry.

"Illegal, unregulated or unreported fishing activity threatens both the health of fish stocks and access for Canadian fish products to certain international markets," said the department.
