Police are trying to unravel a mystery after a boat was stolen from Halifax's Armdale Yacht club in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

A Coast Guard rescue crew was the first to respond after a call was made sometime after midnight. The Coast Guard vessel, Life Boat Sambro, was dispatched and reached the yacht in question around 2 a.m.

The Coast Guard told CBC News that they found the boat had run aground not far from the yacht club, in the Northwest Arm.

Police said two people and a dog were rescued from the ship and brought to shore.

Police also said the two people found on the boat were not known to the vessel's owner. They said the people responsible for taking the yacht are still at large.

Halifax Regional Police and RCMP are continuing to investigate the case.
